Quick Fixes: Changing Hardware

4 Jun

If there is one thing I’ve learned from all the before and afters in the blogosphere, it’s to never under estimate how a change in hardware can transform a piece from ordinary or dated to totally chic.

My husband and I recently moved into a new apartment (which is the reason I have been on vacation from blogging) and have bought a bunch of new furniture for our place. One thing we were in desperate need of was a dresser. I just could not bring myself to live another day longer with the plastic three-drawer bins I used in college!

Like most newlywed twenty-somethings, we’re on a budget, so we chose to buy a no frills dresser from Ikea. Despite the fact that it took hours to assemble, we love it and it fits perfectly against the one wall in our master bedroom. Even though we were satisfied with the new piece, there was one thing that bugged me about the dresser – the boring drawer knobs.

I originally planned to swap the dresser hardware for vintage glass knobs, but after a trip to Anthropologie, I found cute yellow and white swirl knobs with the phrase “where did I put it,” written on them. The best part – they were on clearance!

Because I knew the knobs would really pop against the black dresser, I decided to only switch out the top four. I thought switching out all of them would be too much of a statement.

So what do you think? What hardware changes have you done to customize or revive a piece?

Ok, I seriously did almost the exact same thing withe the same dresser from ikea – I just purchased different knobs from anthropologie. It makes it so much better (and it is a really great dresser!).

Too funny! Hopefully you didn’t put the drawer sides on the wrong way like me. Thank god my husband is handy and was able to fix them. 🙂

Great idea, the picture in the background looks familiar, is it where I think it is?

Yes! 🙂 Beverley and Neil found it in a shop and bought it for us. It’s so nice to wake up to Positano.
