Fashion Trends My Husband Hates

16 Jul

As women, we tend to embrace fashion trends more easily than men. We’re open to new silhouettes, colors and patterns and in most cases, at least try on the latest trend in the dressing room, even if we decide it’s not for us. We also have mad respect for women that have the confidence to pull off the most daring of trends.

However, men I find tend to be less appreciative of women’s fashion risks. This is especially true for my husband who vehemently hates three current fashion trends: harem pants, rompers/jumpsuits and mom jean shorts. Now I’m not going to lie, I do hate two out of the three. Can you guess which ones? Here’s his and my rationale:

Harem pants: This trend is the most offensive to my husband. Recently, we were in San Francisco and a woman walked past us wearing these pants. I knew it was only a matter of seconds before my husband would poke me and say: “Did you see what she was wearing?!?!?!” and “I don’t know why a woman would choose to wear that.” For those of you who don’t know my husband, he is a very patient and low key guy, so it is incredibly amusing when he gets all worked up over a piece of womens clothing.

  • My verdict: HATE. Sorry ladies, but there is nothing flattering about a low crotch and excess fabric around the hips and butt.

Rompers/jumpsuits (or as my husband calls them: onesies): If you ask my husband what he thinks of these two pieces, he simply says “they just look so dumb!” My husband definitely favors tailored clothing on women, which is probably why he’s not a fan of rompers/jumpsuits that tend to be more flowy.

  • My verdict: I think they can be quite cute and chic. However, most of the time I think these pieces are too flowy and don’t give women enough shape. Or, they are in such cutesy prints that it looks like kids clothing.

Mom jean shorts: My husband is a “butt” guy so it’s not surprising that he hates mom jean shorts that have a history of making women’s butts look flat.

  • My verdict: HATE. Didn’t we just work tirelessly to get our moms out of these? And now, we are willingly bringing them back?! There’s a reason these shorts (and pants) went out of style – they’re incredibly unflattering. The butt issue we’ve already mentioned, but what about that longer front zipper that frankly makes the crotch area look weird.

Are there any fashion trends your man hates? Do you agree or disagree with him? I’m always fascinated with fashion trends that push people’s buttons!

xoxo, Andi

I agree with him. I hate all the lets bring back the 80’s frumpy looks. It was bad then, it is bad now. Just wear what makes you look good ladies, not what you “should” be wearing.

Well said Kohli! I totally agree! 🙂

My pet hate: “corsets” the ones without the ridged support being worn as a normal top.
Most cases corsets look great, but when it’s your own flab that makes it tight and restricts your movement it isn’t sexy, just mildly neauseating…

Fashion should work for you, not against you! 😉

Enjoyed this piece, I just feel,if you the confidence to wear it DO! I love fashions and seeing all the trends come and go, I can remember a lot of them from my past. My favorite was a tight fitting soft denim jumpsuit/dungarees, with a tailored matching jacket, I LOVED it, I had the cork platform sandals too! The only problem was if I needed to go to use the bathroom in a hurry, it took forever to prepare! Those were the days, when fashion came first with me 🙂

You will have to show me pictures of that jumpsuit and matching jacket! So often it’s fashion over comfort for us ladies!
