health benefits of parsley tea

We’re all familiar with parsley as a pantry staple, enhancing the flavor of our favorite dishes. But did you know that parsley also boast wonderful medicinal properties? I discovered the health benefits of drinking parsley tea after reading this article from MindBodyGreen. According the author, parsley helped clear her skin. As someone who suffers from adult acne, I nearly raced to the store to buy a bunch of parsley.

Parsley is a good source of vitamins A, B12, C and K, and features high levels of beta-carotene and folate. Drinking parsley tea will help combat flatulence, ease menstrual pain, reduce inflammation, improve digestion and boost the immune system. Because of the herb’s diuretic properties, parsley tea is often used for detoxification. Whether you’re removing toxins from the body or suffering from a hangover, parsley tea will give you liver added support.

Fresh organic parsley from my herb garden. Growing your own herbs saves money, a trip to the store and provides piece of mind that the plants aren’t being treated with harmful chemicals.

Interested in brewing a pot of healthful parsley tea? Here’s the easy-to-follow recipe:

Parsley tea ingredients:

  • 2-3 sprigs of fresh parsley (preferably organic)
  • Hot water
  • Quarter lemon (preferably organic)

Recipe directions:

  • Boil water using a small sauce pan or kettle
  • Thoroughly wash the fresh parsley and lemon
  • Fill a pitcher, thermos or teapot with boiling water
  • Add 2-3 sprigs of fresh parsley and a quarter lemon
  • Steep ingredients for 5 minutes
  • Remove parsley
  • Drink and enjoy!

Depending on how long you steep the ingredients, parsley tea can have a pretty strong taste. It took a few cups for me to get used to the savory flavor. To soften the bite, I typically add a quarter lemon.

Like everything, too much of a good thing can be bad, so it’s best not to drink more than 2 cups of parsley tea a day. Make sure to consult your physician or naturopath before consuming any medicinal remedies.

What are some of you favorite herbal remedies?

Andi
