DIY: Embellished Flip Flop Sandals

DIY Embellished Flip Flops

During the summer I live in flip flops. Every year, I re-buy the same boring, yet reliable, black flip flops from Target. Of all the brands I’ve owned, Target flip flops are definitely the most comfortable. I love the super soft, spongy base. I even wear them sightseeing. However this year, I wanted to shake things up and decided to embellish the straps of my favorite sandals. And I just love how this simple project turned out. Not only do the flip flops look super cute and chic, they are also even more comfortable. By covering the rubber straps with soft yarn, it basically eliminates the chances of getting a blister.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I recently brought home a huge haul of yarn. Although I plan to use the skeins for an upcoming weaving project, I decided the colors were too perfect not to use on my sandals. My favorite yarn of the bunch is a small ball of recycled silk from Nepal. I love using reclaimed or recycled materials in my DIY projects.

This DIY project is really easy, only requiring a few supplies:

  • Assorted yarn or embroidery floss
  • Scissors, preferably a pair with an extra point nose
  • Flip flops

Tip: The thicker the yarn or string, the easier and quicker it is to wrap the straps.

Step 1:

Gather your supplies. Make sure to determine your design before you start in order to avoid unwrapping the string if you don’t like the pattern. To start weaving, tie your first strand at the base of the sandal strap, keeping the knot on the underside. It’s best to work from the bottom of the straps, moving up and then back down the opposite side, that way the tie offs are located in an area that isn’t visible.

Step 2:

Once you’ve reached the end of your first string, take the end and push it through the last loop (as shown) to secure the strand. Next, tie a new piece of string on top of the old strand to further secure the former color. Hide any leftover string ends by wrapping the new strands over them.

Step 3:

When you’ve made it around the entire sandal, make sure to securely tie off the last piece of string and then cut the tail. Trim any remaining errant strands and you’re finished! That was easy wasn’t it? 🙂 Here’s a few more shots of the finished sandals.
