Trying the trend: nail art

24 Jul

This past weekend, I finally gave in to the nail art trend. My mom and I went for pedicures at our favorite nail salon and just as our polish was drying, the nail tech asked if I wanted a cute design. My first thought was no, I’ve always been a conservative nail polish wearer (I usually just stick to pink or red), however I changed my mind when I realized it would be a great Instagram moment! 😉

I must say I am now hooked! I have been admiring my toes all week and have started to scour Pinterest for inspiration for my next pedicure. Now I know that most people are jazzing up their fingernails and not toes, however my day job is in finance, so creative toe designs are much more appropriate for the office.

Have you tried the nail art trend? What was your favorite design?

My Favorite Natural Beauty Products

16 Jan

Last year, one of my New Year’s resolutions was to find natural alternatives to the beauty products I use. What prompted this switch? My husband and I have become more environmentally conscious over the years and understand the impact natural and organic products have on health and wellness. We are diligent in making sure the food we eat is natural, organic and minimally processed, however we have been quite lax when it comes to the things we put ON our bodies.

Now I thought, like I’m sure many of you do, that natural alternatives would not live up to their conventional counterparts. I had been using the same beauty products for years and had become quite attached to them (side note: nothing makes me more mad than a beauty product being discontinued.) However, I can assure you that great natural products do exist! After little trial and error, I have found products that give me the results I desire, without many of the harmful chemicals, synthetic ingredients and artificial fragrances that are known to be linked to allergies, infertility and cancer.

Here are some of my new favorite natural, organic and/or plant-based products:

John MastersBearberry skin balancing & toning mist. $20.00: This toning mist acts as an ultra-astringent to balance pH, tighten pores and leave skin refreshed. My face often feels tight and dry after washing. If I spritz my face with this toner, I find I don’t need to use moisturizer. Bonus: 91% of the product’s ingredients are organic. This brand can be found online and at Whole Foods.

Acure OrganicsFacial cleanser gel. $14.99: This cleanser does an excellent job washing away dirt and makeup. I’m prone to oily skin, so this cleanser combined with the John Masters toner has helped reduce the shine. This product also features organic ingredients and can be found at Whole Foods.

Physician’s FormulaOrganic wear mascara. $8.74: This is by far the best mascara I have ever used. I have tried mascara at nearly every price point and no matter what, have had trouble with my lashes clumping and sticking together. Not with Organic wear! It lengthens and separates just like it claims. And you can’t beat the price and availability. This product can be found at your local Target or drug store.

Everyday SheaMoisturizing body wash. $14.99: This natural body wash foams well and cleans completely without stripping skin’s natural oils. I can even use it in place of shaving gel. This brand can be found at Whole Foods.

Mineral FusionBlush and eyeshadow. $14.99-$21.99: Although this line of products is not quite as “clean” as the ones mentioned above, it is a step in the right direction. I particularly love this brand’s eyeshadows. They blend so well that putting on my makeup is much easier and nearly fool proof.

Has anyone else done the big switch? What natural and organic products do you love?
