Hat Etiquette for the Modern Woman

Hat Etiquette for the Modern Woman

A few weeks ago I wrote this blog post announcing my new found affinity for hats. But, with a love of hats, comes the need to follow hat etiquette, something that seems to have been largely forgotten in the past few decades.

Incorporating hats into a modern wardrobe is a bit tricky. Styling this fall fashion staple is the easy part. Just spend a few moments on Pinterest and you’ll discover hundreds of women in chic outerwear, wearing the latest floppy felt hat. Yet, we’re left wondering, is it ever acceptable to wear a hat indoors?

Well, lucky for you, I’ve done a bit of trial and error. Not sure when it’s appropriate to wear your favorite hat this season? Follow these guidelines:

Inside: If your hat is classified as outerwear, (e.g. wool/felt hats or ski caps), then it’s probably best to take it off when you’re indoors. Otherwise you run the risk of looking as clueless as someone wearing their sunglasses inside. However, if your hat is more like an accessory, (e.g. baseball cap, fedora, or cowboy hat), then by all means, wear it inside.

Inside and outside: If you’re popping in and out of stores, or simply running errands, then it’s acceptable to keep your hat on once you get inside. Assuming, of course, that you only plan to stay there for a short time. A good rule of thumb: if you remove your coat, remove your hat.

Dining: Dining is probably the most tricky. Generally speaking it’s not appropriate to wear a hat in a restaurant, especially if you’re fine dining. Sorry guys, this also includes baseball caps (except of course at sports bars). However, I think there is a bit of an exception if you’re in a cafe or coffee shop. Casual dining environments often call for a more relaxed dress code, so if you grabbing a coffee at Starbucks or a quick bite at Chipotle, then feel free to keep your hat on, even if it’s considered outerwear.

I hope you find this guide helpful! Do you have any hat etiquette tips to share?

2014 Fall Fashion Essential – The Hat

6 Oct

Fall 2014

Moderno Wide Brim Hat – Free People

I don’t know if it’s because of the hat I wore to Royal Ascot or British hat culture rubbing off on me, but I now  have a real affinity for hats. Which is why I’m so excited about this fall fashion essential! It seems like every outfit I’m coveting this season features a hat as the statement piece. Not surprising considering comfy boho sweaters and floppy felt hats pair nicely together.

I recently purchased this hat from Nordstrom. It’s large, floppy and red. And I love it! Looking to add a hat to your fall wardrobe? Check out these beauties:

P.S. Fashion/etiquette question: do you think it’s ok to wear your hat indoors (shopping mall, restaurant/bar, etc.)?
